Here we are, after months of waiting it is finally available on Amazon Prime Video the irreverent LOL – Who laughs is outseason number 2. The show that in the previous season made hundreds of thousands, but perhaps even millions, viewers of the online streaming platform lose their breath and that sparked the imagination of the public by creating an impressive number of meme which still survive today. Six episodes, about three hours of material, 10 comedians locked inside a theater that with jokes, improvised gags, performances and external interventions, must eliminate their colleagues by making them laugh. In short, whoever laughs is out; whoever manages not to laugh wins. It had been last year Ciro of the The Jackal to have won, on a truly ruthless competition. Who does not remember the “So Lillo” of Lillo, precisely; the “Did you shit?” (sorry, it had to be said), di Angelo Pintus who imitated Chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo, but also helium who reveals himself disguised as Gioconda and then dances the Tip Tap, Fru who makes himself laugh and is eliminated very soon; the sound tube of Frank Matano (who laughs constantly but is always pardoned), the exceptional participation of Catherine Guzzanti and so on? In short, streaming in Italy is all history. They had been Fedez And Mara Maionichi to “lead”. Or rather, to check the competitors in the control room, where several screens showed the comedians framed from every direction.
The cast of LOL 2 between highs and lows
However, we are talking about television, entertainment, content creation. And you know: when a product amazes, innovates and entertains, it can’t do it forever. LOL is the proof of this. Season 2 is not being enjoyed by many, but it would be fair to ask whether it is normal or not, because it probably is. This season we find exceptional participations such as that of Corrado Guzzanti (over all), Maccio Capatondathe Forest wizard, Virginia Raffaeleflanked by the lesser known Maria Di Biase, Gianmarco Pozzoli And Diana Del Bufalo; to close with Alice Mangione, Max Angioni And Tess Masazza (WHO?). Joking aside, let’s remember to give due honor to Alice Mangione, who was none other than Amalia Frellioje in the mythical fake-trailer de The fever by Maccio Capatonda. Highest and most memorable moments of Italian TV. And there is no question.
After all, this season’s cast isn’t bad at all. Indeed, in some ways it is probably superior to that of the first. So what is missing in LOL 2? It is not difficult to answer this question: spontaneity. When we were faced with such a program last year, not even we viewers were able to react to the originality of that format. A show based on comedians who shouldn’t be funny, but how is that possible? Yet this mechanism made viewers laugh beyond belief and created truly memorable comic moments. All thanks to that spontaneity that the comedians themselves had, unaware of everything that was going to happen. In LOL 2 it’s just the opposite.
LOL 2: too driven and not very spontaneous compared to the first season
The comedians got to see the previous season, get ready, get organized and even find ways not to laugh. The feeling is that this season runs on tracks not only self-imposed by the comedians themselves, but also by them authors. A brilliant moment that last year was improvised like that of Musical, this year was instead imposed by one of the very fake buttons pressed by Fedez. As if comedians couldn’t come up with something else brilliant. A kind of deus ex machine which leads to a scene that will never be like the one seen previously, primarily because, precisely, already seen and therefore less interesting; secondly because for comedians it will be impossible not to try to do better, arriving at the inevitable result of doing worse. The same argument could also be repeated for the recurring presence of Lillo. Result as the character of the first season, the one for which even the career of a comedian can be considered changed; here is a little too much presence. Let me be clear: Lillo is a genius and it’s always good to see him around; the moment when Maccio Capatonda discovers him disguised as Posaman in the glass case it is absurdly funny, but… after all: why? Lillo’s presence alone this season is actually a real defeat. If you remember well, in the sixth episode of the first LOL, Lillo is sent back to the scene (and also the same Mara Maionchi participates for a few minutes), because the game actually risked not ending. In LOL 2, on the other hand, Lillo intervenes immediately, several times and doing nothing but re-proposing scenes already seen in the previous edition. Again, the question arises: why?
It almost seems like the writers of this season did not trust in the potential of the chosen comedians. So why choose them? Why limit the potential invention time of comedians of the caliber of Virginia Raffaele and Corrado Guzzanti? How to think that by themselves they were not able to handle the whole program? Because indeed, it would have been. Without making too many spoilers: there was no shortage of funny moments. The voices and characters of Corrado Guzzanti, absolutely brilliant also in creating the assist to the gags of other comedians, to make their opponents laugh: another level. The imitations of Virginia Raffaele, photography of the Mago Forest; the desecration of the joke, the puns and the faces of Maccio Capatonda. Even the tacit agreement of bullying against Max Angioni has its why and thanks to him for having ridden it and used it to his advantage. As for other comedians instead, not received (neither more nor less than last season).
Were Fedez and Frank Matano so necessary?
Unfortunately, this analysis cannot end without having spoken even for a moment of the conduction, an error in the error. Fedez, which is truly a mystery. It is not clear why Fedez could be chosen to try to do something he himself is not capable of: conducting a program. But why? Why want to force a character at all costs to do what he is not really suited to? His participation is of a unique weakness, flanked by a substantially non-existent shoulder. The function of Frank Matano (also here, why propose something already seen in the last edition?) is that of making people laugh where the program does not make people laugh. Accomplice the assembly, in fact criticized by the conductors themselves, the two seem to laugh constantly even in moments that are not justified at all and are perpetually distracted. How can they be attentive to the screens and punish the laughter of others if they just laugh and look away? It seems that this conduction has the exact same function as the mock laughter in the background sit-com: to annoy.
Having said all that, maybe LOL should have been the program lump sum, to be proposed once or a little more, but making the format rest well, without stressing it. This exaggeration, on the other hand, has created a few funny moments that, we repeat, there have been, but on average weaker than in the last season, without the protagonists having a real fault. Better not to think that what we see is the montage of the best moments of six hours total. In short, in the three that we have not seen, what could ever have happened? However, the curiosity remains that in the future Amazon Prime Video can think of re-proposing the format, perhaps distorting it, finding a sensational cast, above all giving greater creative freedom. Because let’s face it: this program has unimaginable potential and is certainly one of the most beautiful products ever seen in modern television.
