Update from November 16, 4:55 p.m.: Hospital care in the Austrian state of Salzburg is on the brink. Treatment of all patients according to the applicable standards could soon no longer be guaranteed. This was announced by the Salzburg state clinics. Therefore, a triage team is now being put together. It will decide which patient will be helped first and who can and cannot receive intensive care in the coming days.
In response to the call for help from the clinic operator with its four hospitals, Salzburg’s head of state Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) announced relief measures. “The situation is worrying,” he said during a press conference. Among other things, some corona patients are to be accommodated in centers for medical rehabilitation. In addition, the population was asked to get a third injection as a booster four months after the second corona vaccination. According to Haslauer, more than a third of all newly infected people are double vaccinated.
Lockdown chaos in Austria: First relaxation after just one day – Chancellor conquers ministerial plan
Update from November 16, 10:30 a.m .: A nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people in Austria only came into force on Monday, and the first easing is already taking place. The restrictions apply nationwide to all people over the age of twelve who have neither proof of vaccination nor proof of a corona infection who have survived the past 180 days. In Austria, the 3G rule now generally applies at the workplace, and people who have not been vaccinated can present an antigen test here. In some areas, however, the 2.5G rule applies to unvaccinated people in the workplace. The areas affected are hospitals, nursing homes and old people’s homes. Unvaccinated people have to present a PCR test and wear an FFP2 mask. But it is precisely at this point that the first relaxation comes into effect.
As oe24 citing Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein reports that in an emergency, these people who are obliged to test can only be required to perform an antigen test for the workplace. As the portal quotes a message from the Minister of Health, this is only possible “for reasons of lack of availability”.
Chancellor Schallenberg against general exit restrictions
Update from November 15, 10:40 a.m.: The Austrian Chancellor Schallenberg (ÖVP) gave Health Minister Mückstein a rejection on Monday. This had promised a general nocturnal exit restriction as a further measure. Schallenberg, on the other hand, does not want any new measures in night dining. Rather, he would like to use the lockdown for the unvaccinated as a motivation for citizens to get vaccinated. Rather, he is thinking about expanding the FFP2 mask requirement and similar measures.
Update from November 14th, 10:40 p.m .: After the lockdown for unvaccinated (see first report) the Austrian federal government is also thinking of night exit restrictions for all citizens. This proposal is on the table and will be decided next Wednesday, said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) on Sunday evening in the ORF news program “ZiB2”.
Austria: Minister wants curfew for vaccinated people too
“We’re all in the same boat,” said Mückstein. If a general lockdown is to be prevented, a reduction in contact between people is imperative, the minister said. The restrictions would apply from 10 p.m. and also mean that night restaurants would be closed again. In the middle of the week it will be seen whether the lockdown for the unvaccinated has already worked, Mückstein continues.
Corona: Austria decides to lockdown for unvaccinated people from tomorrow – only for urgent reasons on the street
First report: Vienna – The decision was expected, now it is: In Austria, a lockdown for corona-unvaccinated people will apply from Monday (November 15). Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) and the heads of government of the federal states decided on Sunday in Vienna. The measure applies to the fight against the pandemic. “We are not taking this step lightly,” said Schallenberg. But the numbers speak a clear language.
The new restrictions should apply to citizens who neither have a vaccination certificate nor proof of a corona infection that they have survived in the past 180 days. Adherence to the regulation should be checked with random samples. The aim is to increase the willingness to vaccinate and to significantly reduce social contacts. According to the dpa, the far-reaching exit restrictions are initially limited to ten days. About two million people are affected.
Unvaccinated lockdown in Austria: leave home only for urgent reasons
Unvaccinated people are then only allowed to leave their home to go shopping for groceries or other essential goods, to go to work or training, to play sports or when they need medical help.
The lockdown still has to be approved by the main committee of the National Council – i.e. the Austrian parliament – on Sunday evening. According to the APA news agency, a majority is considered certain there. Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) also announced mandatory vaccinations in the health and care sector.
In Austria, the 7-day incidence of corona was most recently more than 800, among the unvaccinated, according to Schallenberg, it was even 1700. The country’s corona vaccination rate is below the EU average, and with 65 percent is also behind Germany . Tightening has been in place since the beginning of November, which is also having an effect. The number of vaccinations skyrocketed and is now back to the level of July.
Lockdown for unvaccinated people in Austria: Corona vaccination rate below EU average
The state capital Vienna will be the first region in the EU to start vaccinating children between the ages of five and eleven from Monday. And the residents of Vienna can receive a booster vaccination just four months after their second vaccination.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a new assessment of the corona situation on November 12th. Austria ranks the authority among the 13 EU countries in which it is “worrying”. Germany, Denmark, Finland and Luxembourg are also on this list.
According to the ECDC, Belgium, the Netherlands (which have had a lockdown for unvaccinated people since Saturday), Poland and the Czech Republic are considered “very worrying”. The agency pointed out that the countries with lower vaccination rates continue to be hardest hit. (AFP / dpa / frs)
