ANDThe Disciplinary Committee of the championship will meet this Monday to make a decision that will not only be key in terms of the League standings, but should also set a standard in terms of the management of violent people in Colombian soccer.
According to the criteria of
Its three members, Luis Antonio Hernández, Wilson Ruiz and Jorge Iván Palacio, will continue an analysis that already began on Friday and that left no decision, about the outrages caused by Junior and Nacional fans at the Atanasio Girardot stadium. It should be remembered that the presidency of the entity, headed by Fernando Jaramillo, does not intervene in this process.
On Thursday, after Nacional’s second goal, members of Los Kuervos, one of Junior’s brave bands, attacked the green team’s barristas, who hit back. Media photographs and videos circulating on social media showed that there were fights with knives in the stands.
The brawl spread to other stands, to the transfer areas and, then, to the outskirts of the Atanasio. The balance was 25 injured, including a police officer. The game was suspended in the 57th minute.
Nacional had already spoken out on Friday about what happened, rejecting the acts of violence. “We reaffirm our commitment to the search for solutions and we will continue to do so in spaces such as the Football Coexistence and Security Table, led by the mayor of Medellín. Also, with our social initiatives that aim to make the stadium a family space,” the club said in a statement. Junior did not make any statement.
Now, the sports authorities will be in charge of studying a very complicated issue, since since Friday they have been analyzing the report presented by the central referee of the match, Nolberto Ararat, and the different video and audio evidence, to determine the responsibility of both clubs. .
What is ruled out is that the game will be resumed. “In sports, the game is over due to lack of guarantees, it would be absurd to play that. It ended where it ended, the championship disciplinary committee must define the issue of points,” Jaramillo told Blu Radio on Friday.
The great difficulty that this case has is the fact that fans of both clubs participated in the riots and that is a problem in making a rival decision. Among the causes to punish a club for “withdrawal or resignation”, according to article 83 of the Single Disciplinary Code of the Colombian Football Federation, is: “If due to the actions of the leaders of a club, municipal or departmental team or by a factor for which the club or match organizer is responsible, a match cannot be played or is ended early by order of the referee,” as happened on Thursday. And in this case, the misconduct was from both the Junior team and the National team.
Junior has already asked to be given the three points for the incidents
Appealing to that factor, according to press reports, Junior asked that the match be declared won. But in the same code there is another point, in article 84, in which you must also assume responsibility.
“The clubs that act as visitors will be responsible for the improper conduct of spectators considered to be their followers, in accordance with the degree of guilt that can be established. Spectators seated in the stands reserved for visitors are considered followers of the visiting club, unless proven otherwise.” the regulation says.
The background to the riots between Unión Magdalena and Junior fans in 2022
There is a precedent regarding the possible decision that the Disciplinary Committee could make. It was on April 23, 2022, when the classic between Unión Magdalena and Junior de Barranquilla ended in the 73rd minute, when the match was tied 1-1, a fight broke out between fans of all the teams, who even arrived to invade the playing field and tear down dozens of chairs from the Sierra Nevada stadium. The brawl left one fan dead.
At that time, the Committee gave the points to Junior, sanctioned Unión with ten games behind closed doors and Junior with three and fined the Samario club 55.6 million pesos and the Barranquilla club with 11 million. The reason why the punishment was greater for the Union was the fact that it was the organizer of the show.
With the repeated incidents carried out by fans in recent weeks, this Monday’s meeting takes on enormous importance.
