On Wednesday, Alexander Stubb discussed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's support for Ukraine, among other things. At 5 p.m., a live broadcast of the discussion session begins, where Stubb talks about “the new era of defense”.
Republic president Alexander Stubb says that no decisions have been made in NATO about establishing a possible sub-staff of the Army in Mikkeli. Evening newspaper said on Tuesday, based on his sources, that NATO is considering the matter.
According to him, NATO's decision on where to locate the headquarters is a purely military decision, not a political or regional one. Finland is working with its allies to find the best solution, Stubb said.
“I don't want to put the cart before the horse,” Stubb said.
Stubb answered the question on Wednesday at a press conference of the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with in Brussels.
According to Stoltenberg, NATO has a positive attitude towards the fact that Finland has offered to place the sub-staff of NATO's ground forces in its territory.
“But no decisions have been made yet… a decision will be made in the coming weeks or months,” he said.
At the event, however, Stubb reminded that with Finland's NATO membership, the alliance's border with Russia doubled. According to him, establishing a sub-staff of the ground forces near this border could be useful.
Stubby and in Stoltenberg's meeting, the armed support of Ukraine was particularly on display. Ukraine lacks a wide range of weaponry, for example anti-aircraft weapons.
Stubb pointed out that Finland's previous defense aid package to Ukraine specifically contained anti-aircraft weapons and heavy ammunition.
According to Stoltenberg, NATO is working to ensure long-term support for Ukraine, so that Ukraine would be less dependent on voluntary support from member states and could rely on NATO's long-term support.
According to Stubb, the continuation of support for Ukraine is one of the most important issues for Finland at the upcoming NATO summit.
Stubby the program of the two-day visit to Brussels included discussions on, for example, security and defense policy issues, the situation in Ukraine, and the upcoming NATO summit in Washington.
After the meeting with Stoltenberg, Stubb will give a speech on the new era of defense at a discussion event at the Friends of Europe think tank in Brussels. HS will show it live at 5 p.m.
