Lithuania allowed the use of NATO forces in circumvention of Article 5 of the Charter, which provides for the collective defense of members of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced by the commander of the country's army, Valdemaras Rupšis, during his visit to the USA, transmits press service of the Armed Forces of the Republic.
“The American battalion unit stationed in Lithuania, as well as the NATO forward presence battalion and the German brigade, are already under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR) and can be activated without waiting for the commencement of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty,” Rupshis is quoted as saying .
During the meeting with the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, the Lithuanian army commander also discussed the possibility of transferring US air, naval and other military forces to Vilnius.

Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda commented on reports of a possible outbreak of conflict between NATO countries in the Baltic states and Russia. According to him, these rumors are fanning military hysteria by public figures and the media.
The possibility of a war was also denied by the command of the Lithuanian army. Thus, General Rupshis stated that the military does not receive information about this either from official sources or from intelligence data.
