Literature Helsingin Sanomat awards the best first book of the year in a live broadcast starting at 6.30 pm – Here are the candidates

Helsingin Sanomat the literary prize will be awarded for the 27th time on Thursday, November 18th. The prize will be awarded at the magazine’s invitational event and the prize will be shown live on HS.fi from 6.30 pm.

The winner of the award will be decided by a six-member jury chaired by Helsingin Sanomat’s literature editor Antti Majander. The recognition, EUR 15,000, was awarded for the first time in 1995. It continues the tradition of the JH Erko Prize, which was awarded in 1964–1994.

This year, 80 firstborns appeared, and the jury raised five novels, three works of poetry, and two collections of short stories to the top ten.

Ten candidates and their books are:

  • Satu Erra: For a moment I, Poetry Collection (Poesia)

  • Niko Hallikainen: Canyon, novel (Ottawa)

  • Janne Holmström: Long ago drowned, Poetry Collection (Checkers)

  • EL Karhu: My brother, novel (Work)

  • Silja Liukkonen: Vippi people, novel (Ottawa)

  • Milka Luhtaniemi: Churn, collection of poems (Gummerus)

  • Maisku Myllymäki: Holly, novel (WSOY)

  • Sanna Puutonen: Heart wall, novel (Ottawa)

  • Meri Valkama: Yours, Margot, novel (WSOY)

  • Elina Viinamäki: My wife and other personal matters, collection of short stories (Atena)

Last in the award won Terhi Kokkonen in his novel Marches (Big Dipper).
