Tolonen received the first installment of the Harry Potter book series at the age of nine. Twenty years later, he still sinks into the world of wizards, spreads the books in front of him in the cloakroom, and begins the enthusiasm in his voice to speak to the recorder.

Her body is adorned with a tattoo inspired by the Potters, and the engagement ring features a reference to the events of the series. He has read the book series maybe seven times, maybe more, it’s hard to keep up with the bills.

Can be to talk about real immersion, so deeply Tolonen and his Pottermanialisteners of their podcasts delve into the hidden messages and mistakes, fan theories, or other details in books and movies in the wizarding world.

“I get a lot of questions that someone has been thinking about a certain thing, but he has no one else to ask. And then there comes a question about a multi-drink broth or a translator, ”says Tolonen.

According to Tolonen Pottermanian the age range of the listeners ranges from 10 to 40 years. The podcast on the Spotify streaming service has been listened to by more than 31,000 listeners.

JK Rowlingin The Harry Potter book series is still popular, although the last part of the series appeared as early as 2007. The series is classified as a children’s book series, but many of the fans have grown up at the same pace as Harry, such as Tolonen. A new gear has been found for fanaticism.

Elli Tolonen is making the popular Pottermania podcast. It takes a huge amount of time to compile the episodes, as the facts related to the Potter series need to be checked carefully, browsing books and fan sites, as even the listeners are extremely accurate.

Own the enthusiasm is also sometimes ashamed.

“I’m an adult who likes Harry Potter. Every time it’s annoying when I get to read the series again. But at one point, for example, at work, I didn’t tell anyone about this, ”Tolonen says.

Terhi Heikkilä, 30, recognizes Tolonen’s idea.

Heikkilä started Anna Ojalan, 31, with a Potter-themed podcast in the early days of the corona epidemic Pier 9 and 3/4.

“I have to admit that there was a feeling of conflict during my studies when I didn’t know that many others were involved in the Potter meining as well. With the podcast, I am more proud of being a Potter fan when I have understood how many fans there are in Finland, ”says Heikkilä.

Anna Ojala tried to fight the Potter drug when the books came out. Then, however, they took him with them, and still, in his own words, he “recognizes color” in the Hoodie of the Brave Hut.

What In the potter’s wizarding world so hooked?

According to Tolonen, Heikkilä and Ojala, during the corona epidemic, many have rediscovered Potter, the fan phase 2.0 has begun. The wizarding world brings comfort to a real life with a lot of uncertainty.

“Many have put the message that Potters can be comforted. I completely identify with it. There is a slight escapism in it, ”Tolonen describes.

“It’s still such a getaway. The wizarding world is such a different environment and community that there is no need to worry about the things of our world, ”says Heikkilä.

All three fans are fascinated by the multidimensionality of the wizarding world. Each time you read, you will find something new, connections between books and also current themes.

“It has a good basic story, a battle between good and evil. It is built the way good fairy tales are built, but then the magic world is made so diverse that it sinks into it, ”says Anna Ojala.

Terhi Heikkilä’s father got excited about Potter when the first part of the book series appeared. The first book did not yet take Terhi Heikkilä with him, but his enthusiasm only ignited with the second part.

Jocularity and immersion in fantasy worlds are now also allowed in different ways for adults, dissertation researcher Tanja Välisalo Says the University of Jyväskylä. The phenomenon is also evident in the grown-up fans of Potter.

“It’s about a change in culture. For the same reason, films based on different comic book heroes, for example, are also so popular and successful, ”says Välisalo.

According to Välisalo, this is a phenomenon of the 21st century, which has been taken forward by the rise of the gaming industry and culture, for example: To put it simply, it is acceptable today to be a nerd, and things that were previously considered nerdy hobbies have become a positive part of identity.

According to Välisalo, one of the reasons that Potters maintain their popularity among fans who have already grown up is the generation experience of Potters. Although Potters are a twenty-year-old phenomenon, the wizarding world has been a big factor uniting certain generations.

“On the other hand, one of the reasons is that good literature stays alive,” says Välisalo.

Alongside the Potter Wizarding World, he raises, for example, the Moomins, who also belong to children’s literature, represent a fantasy world – and have maintained their popularity among adults as well.

“Nor can we stress too much that Potter has an excellent Finnish translation,” Välisalo points out. The books have been translated into Finnish Jaana Kapari-Jatta.

In the winter of 2006, Riikka Laulajainen from Helsinki queued for a new Harry Potter book in front of the Academic Bookstore in Helsinki. The singer had arrived before ten o’clock the day before.

Outdoor area has previously studied Hobbit-reception of fantasy films in the audience and recognizes connections in the thoughts of comfort and escapism to the idea of returning home that emerged in the study.

Books, movies, and fan culture can serve as a gateway back to a wonderful, familiar world. Like coming home. The world can provide stability to an otherwise uncertain life that involves many changes, Välisalo reflects.

“Escapism, an escape from reality, is easily turned into a negative thing, but in the time of the Corona it has begun to be seen as a positive resource that brings endurance to everyday life.”

Elli Tolonen’s next project is to delve into the flicker, a broomstick of aerial magic. He never thinks he’ll get tired of Potter.

Terhi Heikkilä jokes that he will struggle with the identity crisis. He’s not sure which room it would belong to.

Potter Mania in 2003: Fans had slept in front of a bookstore to get a new Potter book as soon as possible after its release.
