Degenkolb also has the flu. The former winner (2015) was seen as one of the leaders of Team DSM. ,,I’ve got a good grip on it”, Degenkolb said. “Instead of flying to Milan, I’m in bed. There is no alternative. Such a shame, because this is one of my favorite races. I would have loved to participate.”
Team DSM will start on Saturday with, among others, the Dutchmen Nils Eekhoff and Joris Nieuwenhuis in Milan-Sanremo, the first classic of the season.
Stuyven and Degenkolb are not the first toppers who are forced to unsubscribe from Milan-San Remo. Previously, Julian Alaphilippe and Sonny Colbrelli (both bronchitis), Davide Ballerini, Mike Teunissen and Oliver Naesen (all ill) and Matteo Trentin (concussion) preceded him. Mathieu van der Poel will only make his comeback in the Italian stage race Coppi e Bartali after injury until next Tuesday. Last year he finished fifth.
