Lionel Messi after crucial goal against Mexico: ‘Only finals from now on’

“We played with too much intensity in the first half and we only have finals to play from now on.” Those were the words of Lionel Messi as he led Argentina in today’s crucial game against Mexico. Afterwards, all Argentines were happy and relieved, but the coach is not yet crowing about victory.

“It was a difficult game to be the parent, because Mexico played well,” said Messi. “In the first half we played with too much intensity and in the second half we calmed down and became ourselves again.”

“We must not relax now. We only have finals left to play and we can’t miss them. We knew what people’s reactions would be, but I think we lived up to expectations. We played today the way we had to play. We were obliged to give everything,” said the superstar.

Coach Lionel Scaloni did not run a polonaise after the win: „We knew it was going to be a tough match, because Mexico played differently than they normally do. We already suspected that they would play with five defenders. The feeling that prevails now is joy. We are celebrating now, but tomorrow we have to prepare for the next game. The happiness only lasts a short time and you have to find a good balance.”

Teammate praises Messi

Messi’s teammates were obviously very happy and complimented their captain. According to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, there was no real panic for the team after the defeat, because they have Messi: “We knew we would be out if we lost. They made it a tough game, but when you have number 10 in your team, it’s always easier. We never doubted, but these were tough days for us. Today we showed that we can do more.”

Angel Di Maria was especially happy for all Argentines: “Today we were able to give a lot of joy to the people, to ourselves and our families. We keep fighting, as we always do and we want to give everything. Fortunately, today went well and that provides peace of mind.”

“I think there was no pressure in the first game and it didn’t go the way we expected. Today we played a great game against a great rival. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game and that we wouldn’t win by many goals,” said the winger.

For goal scorer Fernandez, a long-standing wish came true today: „As a little boy I always dreamed of playing in this shirt and today I made the dream come true by scoring a goal at the World Cup. This goal cannot be compared to any other. I am very happy with the win. This group deserved that. This win is for all the Argentinians who cheered us on in the stadium and at home. This group of players will represent Argentina in the best possible way.”
