The United Arab Emirates on Monday announced a ban on Pixar’s animated film ‘Lightyear’, the first film of these great American studios that contains a scene with a kiss between two people of the same sex.

The wealthy Gulf state, which includes the emirate of Dubai, and which has a Ministry of Tolerance, is relatively liberal compared to its neighbors. But they stand firm on numerous restrictions in the political and social sphere.
“The animated film ‘Lightyear’, whose premiere is scheduled for June 16, is not authorized to be screened in any cinema in the United Arab Emirates, due to non-compliance with the rules related to media content in force in the country,” the Office of Media Regulation announced on Twitter.
According to this body, which depends on the Ministry of Culture and Youth, all films “are subject to monitoring and evaluation before the date of projection to the public, in order to guarantee that the content broadcast is appropriate with the age classification “.
Contacted by AFP, the ministry did not want to give details about the “rules” violated by the tape, of which posters had already been spread in the streets of Dubai.
This prohibition takes place six months after the country announced that films shown in theaters would not be censored, only classified by age, with a new category for less than 21 years.
Censorship is a common measure in the Arab world, especially in the conservative Gulf region. Movies that include scenes considered contrary to the country’s traditions are often cut or even banned.

What is the Pixar film about?
The film tells the story of Buzz, the somewhat grumpy astronaut from the film ‘Toy Story’, one of Andy’s dolls.
His goal, says the original film, is to protect the universe from Emperor Zurg, an enemy of the Galactic Alliance, but in ‘Lightyear’ he will narrate his story from the beginning.
This is the trailer for the film that will be released this Thursday, June 16:
‘Red’: a film about adolescence with flashes of anime
Toy Story in mourning: Estelle Harris, voice of Mrs. Daddy’s Face, dies
‘Turning Red’, a Pixar film made by women in a world of men
