British Health Minister Sajid Javid has defended the planned lifting of all corona measures in England.
London – “We are very happy with the announced decisions,” said Javid on Tuesday the broadcaster Sky News. He admitted that the number of new infections will increase because of the easing planned for July 19. But vaccine use has weakened the link between infection and hospital admissions and deaths. “The vaccines are working, they are our protective wall,” said Javid. “We have to learn to live with the virus.”
Javid said it was time to focus more on other health issues. Millions of people did not turn to the National Health Service (NHS) with their concerns during the pandemic. This must also be a priority. “It can’t just always be about Corona,” said Javid.
The day before, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that the remaining corona measures in England should be lifted on July 19. These include distance rules and mask requirements. Night clubs and discos are allowed to reopen, there are no longer any audience restrictions for events.
Above all, the lifting of the mask requirement in local transport and in shops has met with broad criticism. In Great Britain, the number of corona infections has recently skyrocketed again. The reason is the rapid spread of the highly contagious Delta variant. (dpa)
