It can be prescribed from 4 years upwards and a turning point for those suffering from diabetes and at risk of hypoglycemia: in fact, it is not necessary to inhale it, just spray it in one nostril for it to work
The abrupt and vertical collapse of blood sugar is a constant fear for patients with diabetes, especially people with type 1 diabetes on insulin therapy. From today it is possible not to think about it with the same anguish anymore, because after being approved last year by the Italian Medicines Agency for all patients aged 4 and over, the nasal glucagon now also refundable. Just a squirt in the nose is enough to save your life, with an easy to use and effective spray.
Nasal spray
Over 40 percent of people with type 1 diabetes experience an episode each year hypoglycemia, which can also happen to one in four people with type 2 diabetes who are treated with insulin: a real sword of Damocles, because if your blood sugars drop too much and you do not intervene to recover from the crisis you can get to lose consciousness and even a coma. This is why the hypoglycemia is feared by patients: as long as the drop is minimal and one remains conscious, one can intervene alone with rapidly absorbed sugars, but if the hypoglycemia is more severe and there is no one to provide help, things can get bad. The glucagon, insulin antagonist hormone, the lifeline in the most serious situations in which there is not a minute to lose: in a very short time it demobilizes the glucose reserves and promotes its synthesis by the liver, solving the sugar crisis. From 2020 available in nasal spray version for patients aged 4 years and over: it is not affected by temperature changes as happens with the version to be injected, it can always be carried with you and is foolproof, as well as being very effective since solves even the most serious hypoglycemia in minutes.
Refundability
Now it was full reimbursement approved and great news for diabetes sufferers, as he explains Paolo di Bartolo, President of the Italian Association of Diabetic Doctors and Director of the Clinical Diabetes Network of the AUSL of Romagna: Until last year, glucagon was available only by intramuscular injection and it was therefore necessary to have someone able to administer it; glucagon arrived in our country a year ago nasal spray formulation, a powder that should not even be inhaled as it can also be used on unconscious patients. A puff in one nostril is enough to get the effect. Allowing free access to this drug, which can literally be a lifeline for patients, is a very important step forward in restoring patient safety and improving their quality of life. There are no dosage adjustments, no storage precautions, no special instructions to follow: in short, a real life insurance, which will finally guarantee clearer days for people with diabetes.
