France and Egypt have been carrying out a secret mission since February 2016, the ‘Operation Sirli’, which has as its theater the western desert region of Egypt, which extends from the Nile to the border with Libya.
Initially born as electronic surveillance operation in an anti-terrorism key, the mission had like target also gangs of human traffickers and smugglers, with at least 19 air strikes causing hundreds of civilian casualties, many of them likely hit by mistake. This is what the investigative site reveals ‘Disclose‘, which had access to hundreds of top secret French intelligence documents.
The documents show that the operation, launched under the presidency of Francois Hollande, was later confirmed by Emmanuel Macron, who thus strengthened the military alliance between Paris and the government of General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. According to the site, the documents “show how the operation hidden from the public was used by the Egyptian state in favor of a campaign of arbitrary executions. State crimes of which François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron were constantly informed”. According to Disclose, the French forces would have been involved in at least 19 bombings against civilians, between 2016 and 2018, with a toll of several hundred deaths.
