Libya | In Libya, protesters attacked the parliament building – Part of the building burned down

The parliament building was empty during the attack.

in Libya protesters stormed the parliament building in the city of Tobruk on Friday.

People demonstrated due to deteriorating living conditions and political deadlock. The protesters accused the parliament of treason and stealing public funds. The background is also the constant power cuts in Libya, because of which people have not been able to cool themselves in the sweltering heat.

Picket managed to break into the building and did vandalism by, among other things, burning tires. Officials’ cars were also set on fire.

Protesters have also set a part of the building on fire. The building was empty at the time of the attack.

Demonstrations have been seen in different parts of Libya. Among other things, they have demanded the organization of elections, criticized armed groups and politicians, and demanded that the electricity distribution system be fixed. On Friday, several hundred people also demonstrated in Tripoli’s Martyrs’ Square.

Libyan the parliament has been operating since 2014 in Tobruk. The country has been overshadowed by the division between East and West. In October 2020, the parties agreed to a truce.

In May the tense political situation led to an armed confrontation between the different parties. The self-proclaimed prime ministers fought each other Fathi Bashaghan and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah forces.

UN announced on Thursday that the negotiations between the parties have failed to resolve key issues. Representatives of the parties have held negotiations for three days in Geneva, Switzerland. They have tried to fix the constitutional framework of elections. Although progress has been made, the parties are still at odds over who can run for office in the presidential elections, says the UN envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams.

Last in recent weeks Tripoli has seen repeated armed clashes. That is why there is a fear of a full-scale conflict in Libya.

The news agencies AFP and Reuters reported on the matter.
