In early April Liberty Media announced that it had acquired Dorna Sports and MotoGP in a €4.2 billion deal that it expects to close by the end of the year.
The Formula 1 owner has not yet spoken about his plans to increase MotoGP’s exposure, although increasing the series’ presence in America has been cited as a key pillar of his takeover.
During an investor call this week, Liberty boss Maffei said interest in MotoGP from potential partners – including manufacturers – had been significant.
MotoGP currently has five manufacturers on the grid, although in recent weeks BMW has expressed its interest in potentially becoming the sixth in the future.
The recent announcement of the series regulations for 2027 is also seen as a potential gateway for new brands.
“As for MotoGP, after the announcement we had a wave of interest from potential broadcasters, OEMs, potential locations, all very interesting,” said Maffei.
“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the regulatory process, we will formulate these interests between ourselves and our plans. But we can’t really do anything concrete with the MotoGP management team, to avoid jumping out of the water until we have the regulatory approval”.

“So, we’re making some plans. We have some really good ideas, I think and hope, and we hope to get permission to do them soon.”
Liberty is confident of obtaining regulatory approval for its MotoGP acquisition, which Maffei says is “progressing” in the right direction.
And he added: “I want to reiterate the attractive qualities of this asset: a world-class sport with incredible races. For example, in the first four races 10 drivers from seven teams stood on the podium and the average gap to decide the winner of the race is was about a second.”
“The new technical regulations for 2027 were announced on Monday. Even more competitive races are expected. And more overtaking thanks to these new technical regulations.”
“The turnout at the races is very good. For example, the Portuguese GP in Portimao recorded a 41% increase compared to the previous year and the Spanish GP in Jerez recorded the highest turnout since 2015.”

“This sport is amazing and Liberty has the experience to help them grow exposure around the world.”
“A couple of updates on the deal. We are also proceeding with the necessary regulatory compliances. We have syndicated financing commitments and hedged our FX exposure, and expect to close by the end of the year.”
