Although the real splash of cold water would have been a cancellation of their reunion tour, the news has not been very amusing to fans either: after ensuring that there would be a new album by Oasis to accompany the reunion tour, Liam Gallagher now says it was all “a joke.”
It all started last April, after a tweet from a fan asking when they were going to record a new album. Liam answered with one word: “November.” Months later, in August, speculation skyrocketed after Noel was seen heading to a recording studio following the Oasis reunion announcement.
In September, another fan told him: “Is it true that Oasis will have a new album?” Liam replied: “Yes, it’s done now.” He also responded to a fan who asked him if a new album was “in the air,” to which he said, “It’s in the bag buddy, fuck the air.” A few weeks later, earlier this month, the singer told his fans on Twitter that he was “blown away” by the material Noel had written for the album.
In fact, the older brother also unconsciously added gasoline to the fire of rumors, since in several recent interviews he revealed that he had accumulated a large number of compositions during the pandemic confinement. According to Noel, there would be enough songs written for at least two albums, and although he did not explicitly mention that they were for Oasis, shortly afterwards he was seen entering a recording studio with his sound equipment, leading to speculation that they could be for the band and not for his solo project, High Flying Birds.
But this Monday, Liam responded to a tweet from a fan news account that fueled the theory that the brothers were “working hard” on a new album: “Let’s calm down, there is no Oasis album in the making. I was joking, Damn, the reason is that everyone is a little tense these days, I’m sorry if I’ve bothered anyone, but damn, it was a laugh,” says the unexpected message.
Then, in response to a fan who said that the reunion tour is “enough” and that there doesn’t need to be a new album, Liam wrote: “Exactly, people always want more, we’re going to go into a big stadium and we’re going to shit like crazy and see what happens next. Another fan went further asking him “and why not?” in reference to the possibility of recording new songs, but he has responded: “I’m busy.”
However, as British outlet New Musical Express points out, “fans remain hopeful, given Liam’s history of tweets coming true. For example, he mentioned the photo shoot he was doing with Noel before the comeback was announced, and hinted that the band would play some big gigs in Manchester, before anything became official. More recently, it was also teased that Richard Ashcroft and Cast could support Oasis, and both things ended up being made official.
For now, Oasis’ reunion tour includes big stadium shows in the UK and Ireland, followed by a series of dates in North America. At the end of September they will return for two more dates at London’s Wembley Stadium, before heading to Australia to perform in Melbourne and Sydney, and then playing further dates in South America.
