The LGBT+ Pride Parade is back in Rio de Janeiro this Sunday, the 27th, after a two-year break due to the covid-19 pandemic. The organization of the event expects around 800,000 people on Copacabana beach. The parade is the third largest cultural event in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, behind only New Year’s Eve and Carnival.
This year, the LGBT+ Parade will have as its theme the preservation of the Amazon and the environment, in addition to honoring the victims of the covid-19 pandemic. The organization says that ten electric trios and thematic wings will travel along Avenida Atlântica throughout Sunday.
With the campaign “Courage to be happy”, developed by creative director Bruno Bertani, from Indústria Nacional Design, the parade has been organized for 27 years by the NGO Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBT+. “This is the Parade of rebirth after a period of pain and loss due to covid-19 and especially due to the increase in hate speech in part of society against our LGBTI+ community, of our rebirth as citizens with rights”, says Cláudio Nascimento, President of Grupo Arco-Íris and general coordinator of the LGBT+ Pride Parade Rio 2022.
“We know that resuming the path towards respect for our identities will require courage to break with recent years of conservatism and with the attempt to make hatred prevail. We are always for affection and dialogue”, completed Nascimento.
The parade started this Sunday afternoon and will run along Avenida Atlântica to Rua Rodolfo Dantas. According to CET-Rio, stretches around the waterfront will be closed for the parade. The vacancy and release of the lanes must occur at 23:00.
