The president of the CGPJ assures that it is “likely” that the negotiations will resume after the Andalusian elections
Carlos Lesmes puts pressure on the two major parties to try to unlock once and for all the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). The president of CGPJ this Friday urged the PP and the PSOE to reach an agreement “before the summer” to elect the new members of the governing body of the judges.
Lesmes -very talkative after meeting with the president of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet, to present her with the reports of the Judiciary for 2020 and 2021,- this time was optimistic despite the fact that in three years all the attempts to renovation have failed. He said he was “confident” that there could be an agreement in the coming weeks and clarified that it is not just a “wish”, but that he has indications that “there is a will to make an agreement”, although he does not know if that agreement is already closed.
The also president of the Supreme Court said that he sees “likely” that the negotiations will resume after the elections this Sunday in Andalusia and revealed that he himself whenever they have the opportunity to meet with members of the Government or the opposition insists on the need to put an end to this “anomalous situation” of an interim Judiciary for years. “I urge them and they tell me yes, that they want to do it, another thing is that they agree later,” he lamented.
Carlos Lesmes did not hide his weariness. “The situation we are experiencing is very unusual. Institutions must be renewed on time. It is a constitutional mandate and the Constitution is a legal norm that must be complied with, it is not something that can be left to the will. There may be reasonable delays, of a month or two months, but not pathological situations like the one we are experiencing, three and a half years”, he lamented before recalling that this “unsustainable” lack of renewal is already having consequences in other judicial bodies, such as the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.
