On June 27, Italy said goodbye to one of its greatest entrepreneurs, Leonardo Del Vecchio. The founder of Luxottica and president of EssilorLuxottica died yesterday morning at the San Raffaele in Milan, where he was hospitalized. A great example for young people, Del Vecchio has created a empire in the world of optical equipment. Indeed, the Essilor Luxottica group has over 180,000 employees.
This empire was created from scratch, or nearly so. The father Leonardo died before the birth of the baby, so the mother called her son with the same name as the father. It was difficult to raise a child alone, even more so in Italy in the thirties and forties: Del Vecchio was therefore sent to the college of Martinittwhere he remained until the end of middle school and then immediately went to work as shop boy in a factory that produced medals and cups. The work was starting to hold tight, so in 1958 he moved to Agordo, in the province of Belluno, where he opened a shop of eyeglass frames. This shop then became, in 1961, Luxottica: 14 employees, the base of his empire.
Del Vecchio dedicated his life to his creature, Luxottica, not for nothing he became a Knight of Labor in 1986. In these hours there have been numerous interventions that have wanted to remember his figure. European Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni called him “a great Italian, an example for the younger generations”, while Lapo Elkann he dedicated a tweet to him: “Leonardo Del Vecchio was an absolute legend of Italy and a beacon of the eyewear industry. In the various meetings that I had the privilege of having, he taught me the pursuit of perfection“.
