Governor Eduardo Leite (RS) defended the opening of an investigation by the Federal Police to clarify whether the failure in the PSDB’s preliminary application was the result of a hacker attack. In a publication on Twitter, on the night of Wednesday, 24, the president expressed support for the initiative of former presidents of the legend, who demand that the national direction ask the PF to investigate the causes of the technological fiasco and the alleged cyber crime.
The Foundation for Support of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Faurgs), responsible for the online voting tool, said on Wednesday, in a statement, that it was “very plausible” that a hacker attack on the application used on Sunday took place.
The entity has not yet presented a conclusive justification to explain the problems, but assessed as the most likely cause a “congestion of accesses incompatible with the number of registered voters”. “Since voting Sunday, we have expressed our surprise with what happened, with the delay in clarification and the lack of clear information. President Bruno Araújo has our support and confidence to seek the truth about this possible crime,” he wrote.
Leite was one of the main advocates of using a digital platform for the election. Faurgs developed the app after refusal by USP, Unicamp and UFMG, among other public universities consulted by the PSDB.
Allies of Governor João Doria (SP) viewed the proposal with suspicion, and the definition of the voting model was one of the first clashes between the campaigns of the governors of Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, as shown by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
The group linked to Doria had already suggested calling the Federal Police to investigate the application’s problems during a meeting of the party’s summit on Sunday, but the national leadership of the party so far preferred to avoid involving the PF.
The suggestion to ask for the PF’s investigation came, this time, from senator Tasso Jereissati. Former tucano presidents José Aníbal, Pimenta da Veiga and Teotônio Vilela also support the idea. They must formalize the request in a document this Thursday.
The signatories supported Leite in the dispute. Tasso even launched himself as a candidate, but abandoned the idea to support the Gaucho. The former directors are going to discuss the matter in a meeting with the national president of the party, Bruno Araújo, also this Thursday.
Also on Thursday, the party awaits the results of tests with a new application, the “plan C” so far, after a second tool selected did not have “totally satisfactory” results to guarantee the resumption of voting until next Sunday.
Accentuating a division that had already been manifested since the beginning of the preliminary campaign, the flaws in the application placed Doria and former senator Arthur Virgílio (AM) on one side and Leite on the other.
The PSDB’s caucuses, conceived with the objective of defining the party’s candidate for the presidency, ended up becoming a reason for crisis in the party. Since last Sunday, directors of the acronym have been trying to resolve the impasse generated by the failures and instabilities of the voting application.
