The support of the majority in the Committee on Social Affairs and Health seems to be to be found, at least for the fact that in the future a favorable assessment by one doctor would be enough to obtain an abortion. Currently, an opinion is required from two doctors.

In the citizens’ initiative Numerous changes are proposed to legislation dating back to the 1970s. The initiative is unlikely to materialize as such. However, some of the changes outlined in it are likely to progress rapidly, the committee’s vice-chairman said Mia Laiho (kok).
“I think the vast majority of the committee is in favor of reforming some of the legislation now. In the future, a broader overall reform would be needed, which is behind the bigger work, ”says Laiho.
Laihon according to the majority, support seems to be found, at least, in order to avoid the need for separate affidavits from two doctors in the future in order to obtain an abortion.
“This is the clearest need for change. It would streamline the process so that a single doctor’s assessment would be enough. ”
For other parties, too, it is assessed to HS that a majority of the committee is in favor of waiving the requirement for two opinions.
In the past, the SDP, the Coalition Party, the Greens, the Left Alliance, the RKP and the Now movement have said they support the goals of the citizens’ initiative. There have been differing views on this issue in the parliamentary groups in the center and in basic Finns.
The only one as a parliamentary group, facilitating access to abortion has been opposed by Christian Democrats. Christian Democrats believe abortion deprives an unborn child of the right to life.
“The Abortion Act should be reformed, but I think in a completely different direction than in this initiative: to support the child’s right to life and to ensure the freedom of conscience of nursing staff,” the chairman of the parliamentary group Päivi Räsänen said the citizens’ initiative in a referral discussion last year.
Some parliamentarians, on the other hand, would be prepared for even more far-reaching changes than those set out in the citizens’ initiative. Coalition Party Saara-Sofia Sirén said on Twitter on Twitter that she has a bill to register the right to abortion in the Finnish constitution. Sirén wondered whether there would be support for the initiative among MPs.
Abortion law rose to public debate as the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a preliminary ruling on Friday that had protected the national right to abortion for nearly 50 years.
