The left-wing bloc of the PvdA, SP and GroenLinks has submitted a private member’s bill stating that, on balance, no more social rental homes may disappear. The bill will be discussed in the House of Representatives tonight.
The bill stipulates that a social rental home may only be sold, liberalized or demolished if at least as many new social rental homes are returned. An exception is only made for specific situations.
The number of social rental homes owned by housing associations decreased by 150,000 to 2 million homes between 2013 and 2019. Urban geographer and researcher Cody Hochstenbach revealed this in his book worn outwhich came out recently.
A small proportion of the 150,000 homes have been demolished, a larger proportion have been sold to investors or residents, and a proportion have ended up in the unprotected segment of the housing stock, where rents are significantly higher. The document De Staat van de Corporatiesector, published last week, states that the share of social rental housing in the Netherlands has shrunk from 29.3 percent in 2015 to 27.2 percent in 2020, while the corporation target group is growing. The number of regulated private rental homes even fell by about a fifth.
Member of parliament Henk Nijboer of the PvdA believes that the coalition is responsible for the disappearance of affordable housing, he writes in an article† “Real estate investors become very wealthy due to high extortionate rents, while there is no longer an affordable home for teachers or nurses.”
The left-wing parties also do not think it is a good idea to sell social housing to the sitting landlords, as the aim is formulated in the coalition agreement. “That seems sympathetic, but has disastrous consequences for the number of affordable rental homes,” says Nijboer.
