Berlin – After the debacle of the left in the federal elections, the chairmen Janine Wissler and Susanne Hennig-Wellsow are planning a restart of the party to the left of the traffic light coalition. “We will already start preparing for the 2024 European elections and the 2025 federal elections,” says a position paper published on Friday. “We can be successful again if we fight radically and realistically for concrete changes.”
Wissler and Hennig-Wellsow leave open why the party slumped from 9.2 to 4.9 percent in the federal election. It only moved into parliament thanks to three direct mandates. The party will analyze the trend of declining election results in the next few months, also with scientific support. “Everyone on the left is called to ask how this devastating result came about,” the chairman wrote.
The new role as the left opposition to the traffic light could not wait. The priorities of health, rents, climate-friendly mobility and work should be discussed in all committees and at all levels in the near future. In addition, a member offensive is planned, a better anchoring in the area and in social movements.
“Our party has to communicate faster, more invitingly and more clearly – that affects social media, that affects our terms and our symbolism, that affects the profile of the party and our language,” says the paper entitled “Realign the Compass” . “Our programs and ideas must not only reach people’s heads, but also people’s hearts and stomachs.”
Before the election, disputes over the direction and the internal dispute with the former parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht had shaped the public image of the party. The former parliamentary group leader Gregor Gysi had recently pleaded for the left to strengthen its “Eastern identity” again. (dpa)
