The second free practice session of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix was a difficult session for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari. 18th time for the Monegasque, author of an error 15 minutes from the end of the session that triggered the first of the two red flags of the afternoon and forced him to completely skip the race simulation.
In short, an unprofitable afternoon. In some ways unexpected after a morning session in which Leclerc had found an excellent feeling with his SF21. To make everything more complex, beyond the 18th time that tells little and promises little in view of the rest of the weekend, came the error that led him to crash out of the chicane after the straight of the Kemmel.
The red number 16 showed to have understeer and, for this reason, Leclerc tried to correct the trajectory by steering at an important angle to the left. At that point, foot on the gas pressed, the rear of the Ferrari pushed Charles to lose control of the car, crashing into the wall and breaking the front wing and left front suspension.
Nothing irreparable. Only more work for all the Ferrari mechanics, who will restore Leclerc’s Red in the course of the evening. Certainly, however, not the start of the weekend that the Prancing Horse men expected.
“It was a very complicated day, but I think it was for everyone due to the track conditions. But, yes, we have one night to work on the car and to come back stronger tomorrow. Of course I would have preferred not to finish the day against the wall today, but it’s part of free practice, I’ll try not to make the same mistake over the weekend “.
Leclerc underlined how, between Free Practice 1 and Free 2, his feeling with the car changed significantly despite not having made major changes during the two sessions. Now he and the engineers from Maranello will have to study the data carefully to show up tomorrow, at Free Practice 3, with a more performing SF21, regardless of the weather conditions (we are talking about 80% rain for the whole day).
“In Free Practice 1 I felt at ease. In Free Practice 2, on the other hand, I didn’t. So we have to understand, because we haven’t changed much in the car. So we need to understand what happened and we hope to do enough work to improve tomorrow. I am confident, I think we will be able to do it, and understand what went wrong in Free Practice 2 and then do better tomorrow. “
“The conditions today were difficult and I think they will be the same for the rest of the weekend. We just have to try to adapt ourselves to the situation as soon as we can, to try to have a good set-up in both dry and wet conditions. Once upon a time. that we will be able to do it, we will be ready to have a good weekend “, concluded Leclerc.
