The leader of the Italian team got his second pole position of the season.

Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) set the fastest qualifying time on Saturday, ahead of Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), and will start on pole position on Sunday in Melbourne for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix .

Positions ready for Sunday

In the second row of the third race of the season will be the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), who finished third, and the British Lando Norris (McLaren). Leclerc is the first driver other than Lewis Hamilton to take pole position in Melbourne since 2014.

Despite a blinding sun that several drivers complained about at the Australian city’s Albert Park circuit, the Monegasque ‘poleman’ shone with his own light to beat Verstappen’s Red Bull.

“I felt good! Even more so because it is a circuit where I always had a bad time in the past (…), the car is nice to drive, everything is possible tomorrow, we need a good start”Leclerc commented after his second pole position of the season.

Leclerc (45 points) is currently 12 points ahead of his Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. (33) -who will start 9th on Sunday- and 20 points ahead of Verstappen (25).

The other Spaniard on the grid, Fernando Alonso, at the wheel of his Alpine, who had been in good form in free practice, lost control of his car in the last qualifying session due to hydraulic problems. On Sunday he will start 10th. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) will start from fifth place.
