The seventh qualifying of the 2022 season, on the Principality of Monaco circuit, was once again conquered by Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque Ferrari signed his second consecutive pole on his home track after the unfortunate one in 2021 and his fifth pole start this season. Behind him, to complete the first row, the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. Third place for Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who ‘closed’ qualifying early by going to the block and blocking all the other riders behind him. Only fourth the other Red Bull, the # 1, by Max Verstappen. Giedo van der Garde interviewed the top finishers.
Charles Leclerc (1st, Ferrari): “The pole here is very special. I’m really happy. The weekend has gone smoothly so far. I knew I had the pace, I just had to get the job done. The last lap before the red flag was very good indeed. Nothing changed for us. I was at the limit, I had a lot of oversteer. I struggled to get the tires up to temperature in the last sector because there was traffic. in the end the rear closed a bit, but the time has come. In the end I was improving a lot, I was 4 tenths faster than stopping. It was a great ride. The car felt fantastic. Having Carlos by my side is also great. With dry conditions the situation tomorrow will be more predictable, but we will be competitive in any situation“.
Carlos Sainz (2nd, Ferrari): “Perez had an accident, I was in the running lap and I saw the yellow flag just before hitting him, I had to brake sharply to avoid it. I just barely succeeded. Pity. This is another year where the red flag causes the session to end early and does not allow me to try to take pole. But it happens in Munich. The pole? Yes, it was possible. We had good pace all day. I was building my pace for qualifying. You never know the pace on the single lap, but I felt very good in the car today. Tomorrow? We will try to complete the work. We are in a great position to achieve an excellent result for the team. The car has been fantastic all weekend so we will go on the attack. Rain or shine? I don’t mind either case“.
