This time no errors in Q3. Charles Leclerc’s home qualification was simply perfect, giving no margin to rivals to take away a more than deserved pole position for himself and for Ferrari, which completes the front row thanks to Carlos Sainz’s second place. A double smile for the Monegasque driver, who sees his main rival for the title only fourth behind the other Red Bull, that of Sergio Perez, who up to PL3 seemed the only one who could undermine the red domination.
“I have waited for Q3 to really start pushing. The first lap was good, but even more happy with the second lap, which I couldn’t finish – declared Leclerc at the press conference – In the last heat I didn’t think about what happened last year, I went to the maximum as always. With the team we followed the evolution of the track very well during qualifying, even if there is always the traffic variable here. I didn’t want to hinder someone and have a penalty, but in some places it was impossible, because I was afraid of ruining the tires if I pushed too hard ”.
The race remains a huge unknown due to the rain, expected precisely for Sunday between late morning and early afternoon: “I don’t think I’ve ever driven here in the rain. In recent years we have struggled in the wet, but today I think that we have improved on this aspect“.
