The “Tayouneh” area, near which is located the office of the judicial investigator in the Beirut port explosion, Judge Tariq Bitar, at the Palace of Justice, witnessed a protest demonstration last Thursday called by Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal Movement.
Hezbollah and the Amal movement mobilized to protest in Beirut, in opposition to the investigation into the explosion, after spreading allegations that Bitar was a “politician” in the prosecution against officials only.
According to security reports and witnesses, demonstrators took advantage of the movement to enter the streets in the area and smash storefronts and cars. Among the participants were a large number of men and young men who wore black T-shirts with insignia of Hezbollah and the Amal movement.
And heavy shooting took place during the demonstration, whose parties have not yet been determined by the investigation, while media reports spoke of the participation of Hezbollah and Amal elements in the shooting, and the firing of bullets from buildings in the nearby Ain al-Rummaneh area, which is in large part affiliated with the Lebanese Forces Party.
The clashes that took place in the Lebanese capital claimed the lives of seven people affiliated with Hezbollah and Amal.
Hezbollah accused those it said were “snipers affiliated with the Forces Party” of shooting, which the forces denied, stressing that the clashes erupted after demonstrators passed through a street in Ain al-Remmaneh, breaking cars and assaulting private property.
The judicial source told AFP that Akiki “assigned the investigation branch of the army’s intelligence to summon Geagea and take his statement.”
Army Intelligence is conducting the investigation, and according to the judicial source, 26 people have been arrested, most of whom are supporters of the Lebanese Forces and residents of the Ain al-Rummaneh area.
