Lebanon | Electricity was cut off throughout Lebanon due to fuel shortages – power was recovered by the military

A country in the grip of a severe economic crisis has been short of fuel oil for months.

In Lebanon the nearly day-long power outage ended on Saturday after the military supplied fuel to two key power plants. Virtually the entire country was powerless when power plants ran out of fuel.

The situation was not a significant change from normal daily life. The country, which is in the grip of a severe economic crisis, has been short of fuel oil for months, and in most areas the electricity grid has only been powered for about an hour a day. There has also been a lack of fuel for private generators.

Energy shortages are one of the huge challenges facing the Lebanese government that launched last month.

Lebanon has reached an agreement to import Jordanian electricity and Egyptian natural gas. Lebanon also imports Iraqi oil in exchange for health services. The country’s Shiite organization Hezbollah, meanwhile, has begun importing fuel from its backer Iran.
