Ghassan Oveidat, the state prosecutor of the highest judicial instance of Lebanon, has decided to release all those accused in the explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020. This was reported by the Lebanese TV channel LBC on Wednesday, January 25th.
It is also noted that the prosecutor ordered to restrict the movement of the above persons outside Lebanon.
“The public prosecutor of the cassation instance, Judge Hassan Oveidat, decided to release all those arrested in the case of the explosion in the port without exception and prevent them from leaving the country,” the article says.
Oveidat also decided to transfer the cases of those involved in the case of the explosion to the disposal of the Council of Judges, if it was convened.
On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion occurred in a warehouse in the port of Beirut. More than 150 people died, more than 6 thousand were injured of varying severity. The explosion destroyed and damaged hundreds of buildings.
In April 2021, German companies presented a project to restore these objects, as well as to transform the areas adjacent to them into residential areas, beaches and parks. It is estimated at $5-15 billion.
According to the official version of the authorities, about 2.75 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate, seized by the Lebanese customs six years ago, detonated. Later it turned out that the owner of the ship Rhosus, which delivered a cargo of saltpeter to the port of Beirut in 2013, was Russian businessman Igor Grechushkin.
In September, it was reported that a cargo of ammonium nitrate that detonated in the port of Beirut in 2020 belonged to Savaro. It is part of a network of companies, including offshore ones, backed by Ukrainian businessman Volodymyr Vernobol.
