League’s Star Guardian Event releases this July and here’s what you can expect to see
League of Legends is one of the frontrunners in the MOBA genre. It kept on improving and getting more popular over time, and to this day, it holds an active fanbase. League of Legends is a free-to-play game, which means anyone can enjoy the game without spending money. The game also pulls in players and revenue through promotions, collaborations, and in-game cosmetics and accessories.
One of League of Legends’ revenue sources is in-game cosmetics such as champion skins. While the game is generous in giving out free skins to players through events and from grinding, the most accurate way for League of Legends account owners to get skins is by purchasing them with RP. League of Legends releases skins in batches that are centered around a theme. In-game events often accompany the release of these skins. One such event is the Star Guardian event.
The Star Guardian Skins
The Star Guardian skin line is one of the most popular skins in the game. The first Star Guardian skin was Star Guardian Lux, which was released in 2015. The following year, Riot Games launched the Star Guardian as an official skin line with the release of the Star Guardian skins of Poppy, Jinx, Lulu, and Janna. The skin line also has its own universe and lore. All of the Star Guardian has a familiar that they reference in their voice lines. Each release of the Star Guardian comes with a promotional story or video.
The Star Guardian skin line is based on the magical girl genre from anime. The magical girl genre in anime often involves high school students who hide an alternate identity they take on when they save the world, most often from otherworldly threats. The skin line’s aesthetic revolves around this idea. The outfits of these skins look like a variation of a school uniform with star-themed accessories. Each Star Guardian follows a specific color as the theme for their outfit. Other skin lines released later connect to the Star Guardian skins, like the Pajama Guardians, which follow the same aesthetic, except they wear pajamas instead of school uniforms.
Star Guardian 2022
League of Legends recently released a teaser trailer for this year’s Star Guardian event titled “Return to Valorant City.” The trailer stays true to the Star Guardian style; its art style is a close visual to modern anime, and the theme resembles trailers for anime. The teaser trailer shows shots in a city, followed by an empty school. Towards the end, a woman with pink hair is shown carrying a Star Guardian emblem on her neck. It then ends by showing the words Star Guardian with logos for League of Legends, Wild Rift, and Legends of Runeterra on the bottom.
The Star Guardian 2022 event is scheduled to release on July 14. This event will be the next Star Guardian release since its last run in 2020. League of Legends account owners can expect new skins and in-game activities when the event comes out.
Rumors suggest that the Star Guardian event will be released alongside the next champion to enter the game, Nilah. Each champion is released with a skin available for purchase, and people speculate that Nilah will be the newest champion to join the Star Guardians’ roster. Based on Nilah’s champion trailer, she is a joyful character that wields the power of water through her weapon, a whip-like sword. It would be interesting to see how Riot Games integrates the Star Guardian theme into her character.
While the Star Guardian skin line is based on the concept of magical girls, there have been instances of male champions donning the Star Guardian outfit, namely Ezreal and Rakan. Another male champion that might join the Star Guardians is Ekko. Star Guardians skins are often released as a batch, which is the Star Guardian team they are a part of. Rumors are circulating in the League of Legends community that the next roster of Star Guardians include Ekko, Caitlyn, Kai’sa, Akali, and Rell. Players can speculate that these champions will be the next team of Star Guardians. A leaker named Big Bad Bear claimed that Kai’sa would receive a legendary tier Star Guardian skin while Ekko would get a Star Guardian skin alongside a prestige edition. Big Bad Bear also leaked videos showing models and some animations for Star Guardian Kai’sa, Akali, and Rell. Another leaker also claimed that Caitlyn would be getting a Star Guardian skin.
Please note that these are still unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. Leaks are usually unreliable, so it’s best not to expect too much. What League of Legends account owners can be sure of is that new skins will be released. Players can also expect the event to include activities and challenges that give rewards and tokens, much like other recent in-game events. The Star Guardian 2022 event drops on July 14. Save up and enjoy playing in the fields of Runeterra!
