Marine Le Pen’s trial begins in Paris on September 30
The participation of the head of the French National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, in the presidential elections is under threat – on Monday, September 30, a trial begins against her and some members of her party in the case of laundering funds from the European Parliament through the allegedly fictitious hiring of assistants to EP deputies. This is reported by RIA Novosti.
Le Pen, her father and 23 other party members will be tried at a correctional tribunal in Paris. The politician is accused, among other things, of creating a “centralized system” of laundering money from the European Parliament; the total damage is estimated at 6.8 million euros.
If Le Pen is found guilty, she could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of 1 million euros and the inability to be elected to public office for 5-10 years. In this case, she will not be able to take part in the 2027 presidential race.
Earlier, the Bureau of the French National Assembly approved a draft resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against the President of the Republic. The Bureau is the highest collegial body of the country’s lower house of parliament; currently 12 of its 22 members represent left-wing parties. The left-wing coalition “Unbowed France” made a proposal to impeach Emmanuel Macron.
