Readers of the French newspaper Le Figaro on October 26 commented on the decision of the Dutch court to transfer the collection of Scythian gold from the Crimean museums to Ukraine. Many commentators reacted to criticism of the ruling.
In publication edition cites lines from a court decision that museum exhibits originating from Crimea are part of the Crimean heritage and can be considered the heritage of Ukraine, since this independent state has existed since 1991. The statement was criticized by some readers.
“These items belong to Crimea. The gold of the Crimea must be returned to the museum in the Crimea, ”wrote Libecciu.
“The word“ Ukraine ”means“ periphery ”. Outskirts of the Russian Empire. The treasures of the Crimea came out of its depths ”, – said anna.
“If the fruits of the exhibition are not returned to the lending museum, it will become a very bad judicial practice, no museum will dare to lend its treasures for fear of seeing them robbed by the lending museum,” said another reader.
On the same day, Russian lawyers called the court’s decision on Scythian gold controversial. According to them, the legal position of the owner of the museum items is based on the eternal ownership of the Scythian gold to a legal entity, and not to the state as such. In this case, the museum is an independent legal entity, in its ownership there are things that it can dispose of. For some reason, the court decided to transfer the collection to someone other than its owner.
Lawyer Rob Meyer, representing the interests of Crimean museums, said that Crimean museums can appeal against the court decision.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmyhal, commenting on this decision, noted that the authorities have not yet identified a place for storing gold. It is likely that it will be kept in the Hagia Sophia in Kiev.
