After he held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bouhabib in Moscow on Monday, Lavrov said that Russia had sent to Lebanon satellite images of the port of Beirut before and after the huge explosion that rocked it on August 4, 2020.
In statements to reporters, Lavrov added, “At the request of the Lebanese government, today we handed over materials prepared by Roscosmos … satellite images, and we hope that they will help in the investigation of the causes of that accident. The issue is now receiving very serious attention in Lebanon and we hope it can be ended,” according to to Reuters.
The Russian Foreign Minister stated that he also discussed with his Lebanese counterpart the possibility of Russian companies participating in rebuilding the infrastructure destroyed by the explosion.
The Russian foreign minister did not say which companies could participate.
And the Russian space agency, “Roscosmos”, said last week that it had agreed to provide the images, at the request of Lebanese President Michel Aoun.
It is worth noting that the Beirut port explosion was the worst disaster in Lebanon in peacetime.
The explosion, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in the world, killed more than 215 people, injured thousands and destroyed large areas of the Lebanese capital, and the investigation is still ongoing.
