He says that negotiations to achieve peace are “meaningless” in the current situation
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured on Wednesday that Russia’s military objectives in Ukraine “go beyond” the Donbas region in the east of the country.
Thus, it has specified that these objectives are not limited to the east of the territory, which leaves the door open to advance towards other areas to continue invading Ukraine. “The geography is now different. It is no longer just the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, it is also the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions and other territories », he said.
“This process continues. It is constantly changing,” he said in statements collected by Russian news agencies after the advances made by Russian troops on the ground in recent weeks towards the Severodonetsk areas, an attempt to reach Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
In this sense, Lavrov has warned that if the West continues to deliver weapons to Ukraine capable of carrying out long-range attacks, such as the US’s HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, “Russia’s geographical targets will evolve.”
“Because we cannot allow that part of Ukraine controlled by Volodimir Zelenski or his successor to have weapons that endanger our territory or that of the separatist republics, which have declared their independence and want to choose their own future,” he stressed.
Likewise, he has emphasized that the negotiations with the Government of Ukraine to achieve peace “are meaningless” in the current situation.
Ukrainian grain remains blocked
On the other hand, Lavrov explained that Russia has requested the mediation of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in the grain negotiations with Ukraine to facilitate Moscow’s exports.
Ukraine and Russia hold talks mediated by Turkey and the UN to unblock Ukrainian grain exports, interrupted by the Kremlin’s military offensive.
Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine has hampered shipments from one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat and other grains, sparking fears of global food shortages.
Russian grain exports have been affected by Western sanctions imposed on Moscow for the intervention in Ukraine.
