The 2021 season is giving us an intense world battle, as we have not seen for a while, there are three drivers fighting for the title, but this could end earlier than the current calendar. Yes, because if the European season seems confirmed, the same cannot be said for what should be the final round of the year, in Indonesia.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic, which still does not leave peace, makes it difficult to travel outside the Old Continent and this could have repercussions on the Argentine round, scheduled for mid-October on the El Villicum track. In this regard, Gregorio Lavilla, SBK Executive Director, provides some explanations on the current situation and on what, consequently, the calendar may be.
“At the moment, there are two different conditions – explains Lavilla – Argentina has the track ready, what we are doing is confirming the possibility of going there to avoid the quarantine upon entering the country, because we are working in a sort of bubble to be in a safe environment and to provide all the facilities to ensure that the event can take place. We are having regular weekly meetings with interested people there and we are working to make the event happen, unlike last year, but we always need to wait for confirmation if Covid allows us to go there or not ”.
On the eve of the Navarra round, held this weekend, rumors began to circulate about a possible cancellation of the Argentine appointment, which was also skipped last year again due to Covid. However, the tires selected for El Villicum are already on their way to Argentina, so the intention is to keep it there.
Instead, it seems on the verge of skipping Indonesia, whose Mandalika runway is still under construction. Lavilla reassures the progress of the event, explaining that hard work is being done to ensure that the world championship ends in Southeast Asia: “The situation is the same in Indonesia, with the difference that the circuit is under construction there. The track and the protections have been completed, the Race Control, the medical center, the TV Compound and the heliport are under construction. In the hotel area we have already guaranteed a high number of rooms available for the entire paddock community. They work very quickly “.
The problem therefore seems to concern only the plant, but the pandemic should not be underestimated, as Lavilla points out: “If there is no external element that can stop this progression, for the moment we are planning, with the assumption that it can be finished on time. Since this appointment is in November and there are a few weeks ahead of us, we will continue to follow the situation until we have to make a confirmation ”.
“Everything went well in Most and Navarra – he continues – it worked very well. We knew it would be a bit challenging because on the new tracks everything has to be done well, the way we like to work. We did it, we worked hard, the events were a success and now we are just looking at the next races. Obviously, everyone has already hosted the Superbike World Championship except the last round in Indonesia, so things should be a little easier ”.
