The number of corona cases in Germany is still at a low level. But the infections are increasing. Lauterbach is already writing off the autumn in view of the situation.
Berlin – The corona pandemic is not over yet – unfortunately. The corona cases in Germany are low, but the numbers are currently increasing steadily. Compared to the previous week, the number of new corona infections has doubled. The numbers skyrocketed on Monday: from 324 corona cases last Monday to 546 corona cases this Monday. On this Tuesday there are 1,183 new corona infections within 24 hours (previous week: 646).
Lauterbach’s gloomy corona forecast for autumn
Karl Lauterbach (58) is concerned about this dynamic development. The vaccination rate in Germany is still too low to stop the corona virus, especially the delta variant. “The number of cases increases so much too soon. The vaccination rate is not enough to prevent very high numbers of cases in the fall, ”the epidemiologist and SPD health expert wrote on Twitter.
Lauterbach is also posting a graphic about the corona dynamics in Germany over the past few days. The curve of the so-called active corona cases goes up steeply. Compared to the previous week, there are 60 percent more infected people. The 7-day case number is also skyrocketing. This can then also be read off from the 7-day incidence (10.9, as of July 20, 2021).
Lauterbach: Long-Covid medical bagatelle?
According to Karl Lauterbach, a debate will follow: whether Long-Covid may justify restrictions or whether Long-Covid should be seen as a medical triviality.
Long-term corona consequences also affect the youngest. A high vaccination rate offers unvaccinated people and also younger people protection. But given the delta variant, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a vaccination rate of at least 80 percent is required. In Germany, according to the vaccination dashboard, 46.4 percent of the population are fully vaccinated.
Children up to the age of twelve are initially left out of the vaccination against Corona. The corona vaccine is only approved in Europe and therefore also in Germany for people aged twelve and over. Lauterbach warned in May 2021 in the ARD talk with Maybrit Illner of Long Covid in children. The acute symptoms in children of a corona infection are still mild, but there are children and adolescents who suffer from corona long-term effects.
The number of cases increases so much too soon. The speed of vaccination is not enough to prevent very high numbers of cases in autumn. So we will soon have a debate as to whether or not #LongCovid May justify restrictions or whether #LongCovid should be seen as medical trivia https://t.co/crlfoTiVhl

Corona: Long-Covid in children is clearly underestimated
“From my point of view, the [Lage] still clearly underestimated, “said the Long Covid expert from the Jena University Hospital, Daniel Vilser, on the ARD”Daily Topics ” about the long-covid consequences in children. “Children also suffer a lot from the so-called fatigue syndrome, that is, reduced resilience,” explained the expert. Symptoms are headache, stomach ache, concentration and sleep problems.
In Germany the RKI researched the long-term effects of Covid-19 in children and adolescents. The study situation seems ambiguous so far. A US study could not find any long-term effects in children. According to Italian study – with 129 children – more than half of the children were restricted by symptoms four months after suffering from Covid. Children between the ages of two and twelve suffered, according to one English study less often (7 percent) with long-term effects.
Lauterbach’s question on Long Covid and restrictions is the subject of extensive discussions. Politicians want to avoid another lockdown at all costs. Even Bavaria’s Prime Minister Marcus Söder recently spoke out against it. But the coronavirus can hardly be stopped by words. However, there is still some time until autumn.
