The Sepang tests are approaching and most of the MotoGP fans’ eyes are on Marc Marquez. The Spaniard, after admitting that he seriously risked having to say goodbye to racing following the return of a form of diplopia that had forced him to miss the last two GPs of 2021, finally seems to be back in good shape. In recent weeks, the native of Cervera has ridden on dirt and road bikes and from February 5, in Malaysia, he will finally be able to savor the pleasure of riding a MotoGP bike. # 93 himself explained that he is primarily interested in understanding how his physical body will react to him. In fact, by analyzing Marquez’s state of health, i should not be forgotten after-effects of the humerus fracture of the right arm – suffered in July 2020 – and the three surgeries that followed. After missing the entire 2020 season, the eight-time world champion last year is back to compete in the premier class. His performances have been mixed, especially for the many falls remedied by trying to reach the limit. The Spaniard from Honda, however, was still able to score three victories.
An extraordinary result considering his precarious physical state. Over the entire season, not surprisingly, only Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia have won more GPs. For all these reasons it is not surprising that Marquez was included in the nominations for the Laureus World Sports Awards in the category Comeback of the Year. Alongside him, in the list of candidates for recognition, other more than famous names in the panorama of world sport: from gymnast Simon Biles to cyclist Mark Cavendish, passing through Annemiek van Vleuten, Tom Daley and Sky Brown. Should he get the award, Marquez would win his second career degree. The first of him won it in 2014, as ‘Surprise of the Year’, following the world title won in 2013 by rookie. Curiously the only other rider to have won the Comeback of the Year in history was Valentino Rossi. The bitter rival of Marquez prevailed in 2011. He too obtained recognition after returning to racing following a serious injury.
