After nine races this season, only two riders have yet to earn world championship points: Mick Schumacher, who made several serious mistakes with Haas but was also the victim of various unfortunate episodes, and Nicholas Latifi. The Canadian has the ‘excuse’ of being in Williams, in what is currently the least competitive team on the grid. His teammate Alexander Albon, however, has been able to collect a tenth and a ninth place in the race so far, for three points overall. Even in Canada, on Latifi’s home track, although he did not collect a top-10 finish, the Thai clearly prevailed in the internal confrontation with his team-mate.
Latifi in Montreal crossed the line 15 seconds behind Albon, in a race that had been neutralized up to 15 laps from the checkered flag. Furthermore, during the season, Latifi is at a disadvantage in comparison with the former Red Bull driver 8-1 in qualifying and 6-1 in the race. Eloquent results that do nothing but fuel – despite the denials coming from the team principal Jost Capito – the rumors of a probable grounding in the current season of the Montreal driver to make room for the young man Oscar Piastri. Certainly, even if confirmed up to Abu Dhabi, it is difficult to imagine Latifi still in a Williams cockpit in 2023. The person concerned, however, after the Canadian GP hinted that he believed that there is no equal treatment between him and Albon within the team.
“I think the problem goes far beyond driving style – said Latifi, as reported by the site RaceFans – certainly at the beginning of the season there was a part of this problem. Perhaps a part of the delta can still be attributed to the lap [rispetto ad Albon] to this. But if I look beyond the lack of confidence with the car that I felt I had at the beginning of the season, the pace is no longer there. There are situations in which I don’t feel that my machine is capable of doing the things that, based on the data, I see him doing [Albon], which is not a good feeling. It’s a bit disconcerting. We will use these two weeks off to see what we can analyze“, He concluded.
