The first official frost this year is a lot later than usual, but this morning it was still pretty chilly. In De Bilt, the temperature dropped to -0.2 degrees today at 07:40, making the first official frost day of this autumn a fact.
To speak of official frost, the temperature in De Bilt must drop below freezing. Normally the first frost announces itself around November 3, reports Weerplaza. Last year, however, the first official autumn frost was measured even later, then it only happened on November 29.
The last time it froze in De Bilt was on April 23. The mercury then dropped to -1.7 degrees. The first local frost was measured much earlier this year, on October 16. Then the temperature in Twente and Ell already dropped below freezing, with -0.5 and -0.6 degrees respectively.
Official frost
On 23 October, the first frost on the ground was measured at the national weather station in De Bilt. But there was no official frost yet. To do this, it must cool down to below freezing at the normal observation height of 1.5 meters in De Bilt.
Last night it came to frost in several places. It was coldest in Eelde and it cooled down to -3.2 degrees. It will be quite sunny today, according to the weather experts. It remains dry and the temperature rises during the day to 5 to 9 degrees locally, according to Weerplaza.
Coming night it will freeze slightly in the southeast in many places, elsewhere it will remain above zero due to clouds. Mist or fog can form in the coldest places. Tomorrow it will be cloudy with a local drop of rain. It does not get warmer than 5 to 10 degrees. The wind is weak.
