Russia considers that Johnson’s departure puts Ukraine’s defense at risk
By Javier G. Cuesta (Moscow). The announcement of the resignation of Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister has been received with joy in Moscow. “As for Mr. Johnson, he doesn’t like us very much, and we don’t like him either,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, stressed after the news broke.
The Kremlin has been restrained in stating that this government crisis is secondary. “It cannot be a priority for our work, first of all we follow what is happening in our country,” added Peskov.
However, the spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, María Zajarova, has expanded much more, linking the politician’s resignation to the confrontation that has existed between London and Moscow for years, since the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal with ‘Novichok’ in 2018 for Russian espionage to the supply of weapons offered to Ukraine after being attacked by Putin’s armed forces.
“Johnson was struck by his own BoomerangZajárova has written on her Telegram channel. He abandoned Theresa May in exactly the same way when she went too far with Skripal and began to block herself. Johnson escaped from a sinking ship, betting on his own career. This time, his comrades handed him over. Moral: Do not try to destroy Russia, Russia cannot be destroyed, and you can break your teeth and choke on them.”
The spokeswoman has also taken advantage of the occasion to attack democracies and reiterate her internal discourse to her population: the Kremlin is stability in the face of British “lack of control and chaos”. “It is obvious to all that the liberal regimes are in the deepest political, ideological and economic crisis. The average standard of living in the UK is alarming,” she said.
For his part, former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has stated on his personal channel that this resignation culminates Johnson’s “insolence and mediocre policy” and puts Ukraine’s defense at risk.
“Ukraine’s ‘best friends’ are leaving. The ‘victory’ is in danger! The first is gone,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram before showing his other wishes with an icon of laughter: “We are waiting for news from Germany , Poland and the Baltic countries”.
