Who will be the new chairman of the CDU? A survey has now determined the Germans’ current favorites.
Berlin – A change is needed in the CDU, a personnel realignment. That said Armin Laschet, current chairman of the Christian Democrats, a few weeks ago. Not only he, numerous party colleagues called for a fundamental change within the party. Well-known CDU greats, including Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Peter Altmaier, have already announced that they will not accept their mandate for the newly elected Bundestag and will make room for younger people.
The post of CDU chairmanship is also up for debate. According to a recent survey, German citizens already have a new favorite for the prestigious office: Friedrich Merz is best suited for the chair, according to the results of the survey. 23 percent trust the economic politician to take office.
According to “Germany trend”: Merz favorite among CDU supporters to chair the party
But also Norbert Röttgen and Jens Spahn, next to the victorious Armin Laschet Merz ‘opponents in the recent election as CDU chairman, can gather approval behind them. 19 percent consider the foreign politician Röttgen to be the most suitable. 11 percent are in favor of Health Minister Spahn. 6 percent said they were in favor of parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus, and 5 percent said they were in favor of economic politician Carsten Linnemann. Infratest dimap determined this in the “Germany trend” for the ARD-Morning magazine.
A good third of the respondents (36 percent) cannot or do not want to commit themselves to the question at the moment. With the Union supporters, Merz is clearly ahead: 36 percent trust him to chair. 25 percent think Röttgen is suitable, 14 percent Spahn, 9 percent Linnemann and 6 percent Brinkhaus. 10 percent of CDU supporters cannot or do not want to choose between the named politicians.

The CDU wants to re-elect the entire board at a special party congress as a consequence of the historically poor result in the federal election. Party leader Armin Laschet had announced that he would put his own ambitions on hold. (dpa / fmü)
