At least 19 people, including two babies, died this Sunday from a landslide in North Kivu province, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), confirmed today to EFE civil society leaders.
“It happened around 10 in the morning (08:00 GMT). It was while the women were bathing with their children in the river, and suddenly a part of the earth collapsed on them and engulfed them, causing enormous human losses.”said to EFE by phone David Mwisha, president of the civil society of Masisi territory, where the affected village, Bulwa, is located.
“According to preliminary information, 19 people died, including two babies and women,” added the leader, detailing that the search for possible victims is still ongoing, which could increase the number of deaths from a landslide affected by “the rain that had fallen”.

“These types of incidents are common here, in Masisi, due to the fragility of the soil and certain parts of the mountain that give way”he stressed.
The type of soil in the area where the Masisi territory is located, very vulnerable to erosion, is easily weakened by factors such as torrential rains, which sometimes causes accidents of this type, something that can be alleviated, for example , with the tree plantation.
“We ask the population to continue planting trees to eventually prevent similar disasters from happening. Because landslides and erosion have become frequent in the Masisi territory and this causes a lot of damage.”the North Kivu provincial deputy Alexis Bahunga told local media following the accident.
