SThe new Land Rover Defender has been on the market for a year and a half and everything is different. In terms of stature it is the same as the old one, but otherwise a highly modern car with everything you need and want today, and it is said that it has not lost an iota of its off-road capability.
As before, the two-door, short 90 is the fancier car, it makes more than the four-door 110, especially when the air suspension, which costs 2846 euros extra, is on the high terrain level. In this way, rivers 90 centimeters deep could be traversed. All-wheel drive and reduction gears are still a matter of course for a Defender, and the differential on the rear axle can be locked for an extra 1224 euros. All Defenders have an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF, and instead of just one engine version as in 2016, the 90 is now entering the race with five. Four three-liter six-cylinder and a five-liter V8 lure. The latter is a petrol engine with 525 hp. The other machines have 200, 250, 300 hp diesel or 400 hp petrol.
The basic model with its 200 hp, which is perfectly sufficient to move befittingly, was a guest of the editorial office. 500 Newton meters of maximum torque are a word, the top speed of 175 km/h is done by the engine at 2500 rpm. However, high speeds bring double-digit consumption values. If you only drive 120 km/h at 1650 rpm, you can get by with 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers. This is close to the standard consumption. Our average after 1950 kilometers was 10.1 liters of diesel.
If you like and want the 90’s Defender, you have to deal with a few weaknesses: Despite its 4.58 meters in length, it is actually a two-person car because the rear seats are difficult to reach. Only flexible people can get started. In order to fold the front seats forward and push them, two movements are required in the basic version. Arriving at the back, up to three people sit reasonably reasonably, only they see very little when the fashionable metal panels are attached to the rear side windows. In addition, the then remaining trunk with a capacity of almost 300 liters is a joke for such a large car. A large suitcase fits upright, the depth is only 45 centimeters on the ground, the headrests in the back seat almost touch the rear window.
In order to be able to carry luggage properly, the three-part backrest has to be folded down, but this does not result in a flat loading area. It is also not possible to remove the bench quickly, but the maximum loading volume is a good 1250 liters. When driving, the Defender 90 convinces, it is worlds apart from the previous model. Only the braking performance is meager due to the high weight of 2.3 tons. A starting price of 54,000 euros is frightening, but a comparable Jeep Wrangler is not cheaper.
Before happiness with the Defender 90 is a 90-page price list. Each finish except white costs extra, a white roof as a contrast requires 1149 euros, a third seat in front, which is only suitable for children, is priced in at 893 euros. Many of the extras offered only serve to improve the appearance, such as the sheet metal panels, while the outer loading box on the side window offers a little functionality for a mere 889 euros. A roof rack costs 1474 euros. Our test car ended up costing a good 65,000 euros, so it wasn’t overly loaded with extras. That’s a lot of money for what is certainly a rustic car, but one that seems more out of date than ever. After all, the four-door 110 is also available as a plug-in hybrid. In addition, a purely electric, small Land Rover is to come. Maybe 2023, to coincide with the brand’s 75th anniversary.
