There was a real risk of never seeing the new Lancia Ypsilon on the road. A few months after the debut of the new version of the Turin brand's city car, the brand's first electric car, the CEO of Stellantis Carlos Tavares revealed a really interesting background on the Italian car manufacturer, stating that many would have requested the closure of Lancia, with the Portuguese manager himself to oppose the farewell to such a historic brand.
“You can't imagine how many people asked me to close Lancia when we created Stellantis – explained Tavares – You need to know two things. First, there were many people knocking on my door to sell me Alfa Romeo. And I said no. And there were many other people who told me that I should kill Lancia. It's embarrassing: I said no again.”
The Portuguese manager then spoke about the future plans for the Turin brand, with the arrival of the new Lancia Ypsilon which is just the beginning of the Renaissance plan which will lead to a wider range with the new Gamma flagship and subsequently to the return of the Delta : “You've seen the new Ypsilon and there's more in the pipeline. I was recently in Turin to approve the next model and I can tell you that it is fantastic. In terms of appeal, the next Lancia will be as iconic as the Ypsilon.” The number one of Stellantis concluded by explaining that the group's project is to relaunch the brand in a similar way to what was done with Alfa Romeo: “We expect to do the same thing with Lancia, with its 'renaissance', with the Ypsilon and all the models that come after.”
