Ransom had to be and ransom was. In the last heat of the 2022 season of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo 2022, North America section, Loris Spinelli and Giano Taurino took an amazing victory on the Portimao track, finishing the season perfectly.
The first part of the race, however, saw Nelson Piquet Jr. as protagonist. The Brazilian, who started from pole, managed the race perfectly until the accident of Offir Levy (US RaceTronics). The American driver lost control of his Huracan shortly after a bump, on lap 7, and ended up crashing into the barriers.
This forced the race direction to send the Safety Car to the track and, inevitably, Piquet saw all the advantages he had managed to build up to that moment disappear. The safety car remained on track for several laps to allow the marshals to move Levy’s Huracan and fix the barriers damaged in the impact.
For this reason, the 10-minute pit stop window has been delayed. Once the barriers were in place, the Safety Car re-entered and the pit lane was reopened. Giano Taurino, who until then had managed to stay in third place after an excellent start and a nice double overtaking at turn 5, gave way to Loris Spinelli. And that was the decisive move.

Spinelli, back on track, was able to push very hard by performing a sort of undercut against Piquet, who returned a lap later. At that point Piquet found himself behind not only Spinelli, but also Danny Formal (Wayne Taylor Racing). Formal managed to stay close to Spinelli for a while, but then the Italian broke the delay and won with a gap of 5 “5 on the first of his rivals.
For Piquet, on the other hand, things got even worse on lap 23, a few minutes from the end of the hostilities: Patrick Kujala, US RaceTronics team driver, overtook him thanks to a better pace than the Brazilian. But the Finn was the author of too many infringements related to track limits. For this reason the race marshals have given him a 5 “penalty, making him lose the third place in the final, which has returned to him by the former F1 driver.
Fifth place for Edoardo Liberati, Dream Racing Motorsport driver, able to get behind Luke Berkeley and RIchard Antinucci (crew of the Taurino Racing team). John Dubets and Bryson Lew triumphed in the PRO-AM category ahead of Bryan Ortiz and Sebastian Carazo (PPM Team).
To signal the victory of Shehan Chandrasoma, new champion of the AM class. The MCR Racing team driver was at his first participation in Portimao and his performance was still noteworthy, having won the category race.
Joy also for Slade Stewart, able to triumph in the Lamborghini Cup class despite having finished third in class and 20th overall. For the record, the class victory in this race 2 ended up in the hands of Fred Roberts (NTE Sport).
