The Ministry of Labor has rejected the employer’s offer to raise the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) by 3% this year. This was stated this Wednesday by the Secretary of State for Labor and negotiator at the table, Joaquín Pérez Rey. Yolanda Díaz’s number two in the ministry has been grateful that the employers have sat down to negotiate with an offer, but has rejected it, considering it insufficient.
“A proposal for a 3% increase It is not an appropriate proposal to the extent that it would not respect 60% of the average salarywhich is the commitment that the two political forces that make up the Government have,” Pérez Rey expressed after meeting with the unions and employers to negotiate the increase in the SMI in 2025. “We will assess the extent to which the employers’ position is flexible and the unions are willing to make an effort. From there we will make the decision,” he added.
Labor considers that the employer’s offer – which also requires that the cost of the increase in public contracts be passed on and aid be introduced to the countryside – remains below the minimum threshold proposed by the experts appointed by Díaz. The ‘wise men’ appointed by Labor proposed that the increase should range between 3.4 (37 euros more per month) and 4.4% (50 euros). The ministry has already communicated that it is leaning towards the highest rank
The conclave on the SMI has been marked by the non-validation of the Government’s omnibus decree, which has caused, de factothat At this time there is no minimum wage in Spain. On this issue, Pérez Rey wanted to send a message of calm and has reported that the ministry is already working on an interpretative guideline so that this situation does not affect any worker. A guideline that will probably be translated into an instruction from the General Directorate of Labor, he clarified.
Labor has called on unions and employers to a new meeting on Wednesday, January 29but has no intention of delaying the negotiation much longer. In fact, although there is still no agreement in sight, the department headed by Yolanda Díaz is going to begin the necessary procedures for the rise to speed up the process. “The ministry is going to begin all the administrative and other procedures that will allow it to be in a position to approve the SMI as soon as possible. It is possible to begin processing some of these elements in parallel,” said number two in the Ministry. of Work.
