The Central Chamber of Commerce is concerned that the measures taken to promote labor migration are too targeted at experts.
Finns companies most often need foreign experts for employee-level tasks, according to a survey conducted by the Central Chamber of Commerce.
Just under 70 per cent of companies that intend to hire people from abroad say they are specifically looking for workers in the survey. About half of the respondent companies need foreign experts for expert positions. Every tenth company that responded to the survey applies for management skills from abroad.
The most common reason for recruiting from abroad is that the company does not think that the necessary labor is available in Finland. This was said by 45% of respondents. In contrast, 17 percent of respondents said they did not have the necessary skills available.
Indeed, the Central Chamber of Commerce is concerned that measures to facilitate the recruitment of foreign labor are too focused on experts and specialists.
“Companies also have a great need for ordinary professionals. It must also be possible to meet this need and increase the immigration of workers extensively, ”the leading competence expert of the Central Chamber of Commerce Mikko Valtonen says in a press release.
About 40 percent of the respondent companies have already hired workers from abroad. A similar proportion of companies intend to do so in the future.
About the survey it turns out that the residence permit process for foreign workers is not considered to be smooth in all companies. 44 percent consider the process to be rigid or very rigid. However, half of the respondents answered the question about the smoothness of the process with the option “I can’t say”.
On the other hand, companies that have recruited experts from abroad generally consider the recruitment experience to be positive. Six percent of respondents said the experience was negative.
A survey of member companies of the Chambers of Commerce was conducted from 8 to 13 p.m. December 2021. It was answered by 1,184 companies from various industries. Most of the respondent companies, 23.7 per cent, operate in the industrial sector.
