The neighbors organize workshops, concerts, routes and parades and install a nativity scene and a Christmas tree to claim a united people and a living Mar Menor
The Christmas tree that this year presides over and shines in La Palma’s Plaza del Tabernero is more than a Christmas symbol. It is quite a declaration of intentions with a triple meaning: that of uniting the neighbors, at least, during the festive dates; that of decorating the town; and that of claiming a living Mar Menor. A group of women from the Association of Housewives raised it with their own hands and with recycled materials: plastics, disused fabrics and cardboard, among others.
This year, the neighbors have wanted to reinvent themselves and live a different Christmas. «We want the festivities to be enjoyed by all of us. Let these endearing dates be noticed », explained the vice president of the La Palma neighborhood community, Victoria Sánchez.

Bethlehem and tourist train
The kick-off for Palma’s Christmas was last Friday with the official lighting of the decorations and the opening to the public of the nativity scene set up in the pensioner’s premises, on Santa Florentina Street. It can be visited every day in the morning, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. What has also started have been the Christmas workshops and activities organized by the Neighborhood Association. Among them, the competition for exterior and interior decoration of houses and the concert of the Cartagonova Polyphonic Choir, which took place yesterday in the church of Santa Florentina, stands out.
On Saturday there was a tourist train going around the town and that same day, a workshop on Christmas decorations was given at the civic center. Tomorrow the little ones will be able to enjoy the children’s workshop ‘Your people at Christmas’ and on the 29th will be the performance of ‘Abel Magia’. It will take place in the civic center maintaining all possible security measures, according to sources from the organization.
Storytelling and parades
Activities will continue on January 3 with a Christmas cookie workshop, also in the civic center. A day later, at five in the afternoon there will be a storyteller and a parade of the Cartagena 1990 Musical Group, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., according to local sources.
