Mariano García is the fashionable athlete. World champion of 800 meters in the Indoor World Championship in Belgrade, the 24-year-old middle-distance runner from Murcia has jumped to the fore of public exposure and the focus is on him. This week, the one from Cuevas de Reyllo, a district six kilometers from Fuente Álamo, received the homage of his countrymen. “I don’t move from my town, I’m proud of it”, assures ‘La Moto’ that tomorrow, Saturday, will compete in the 39th edition of the 10 km ‘Noche de San Antón’ International Urban Race in Jaén, the first test as world champion and the most magical night of sports in Jaén. A distance in which Garcia does not have a registered mark.
The event, which will also play a children’s race and another for adults for which there are 14,000 registered, will have a fantastic participation in the elite category (8:00 p.m.) since, in addition to Mariano, there will be very relevant names such as Muktar Edis (world champion in 2017 and 2019 in 5,000 metres), Mohamed Katir (triple Spanish record holder of 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000), Jesús Gómez (double European indoor medalist), Ignacio Fontes; Kevin Lopez; Ayad Landassem; Daniel Matthew; Ouassim Oumaiz; Sebastian Martos; Daniel Arce, Roberto Alaiz or Sergio Paniagua.
In the women’s category, the final list is announced, but the level is expected to be very high as the participation will count, pending official confirmation, with, among others, the Kenyan Alice Aprot (world cross champion in 2019 and 4th in the 10,000 of the Rio 2016 Games and the London 2017 World Cup, and runner-up in Africa in 10,000) the Burundian Francine Niyonsaba (Olympic runner-up in Rio 2016 and world silver in 2017 of 800 meters), or the Spanish Blanca Fernández, Carla Gallardo, Lucía Rodríguez, Solange Pereira, Beatriz Álvarez or Maitane Melero. Athletes from 25 countries for a race in which Jaén is dedicated and which will have 250 volunteers, 25 defibrillators, 13 ambulances and the public will receive 9,000 torches to create a unique environment for the athletes.
